SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT 

(Sự hòa hợp giữa Chủ ngữ và Động từ) 

I. Sentence patterns: 

S + V + O + C + A.

1. S + V.: She is studying.

2. S + V + O: She is studying English.

3. S + V + C. She is studying hard. (Adv)

3. S + V + C. She works as an accountant. (Pre phrase)

4. S + V + A. She is studying in the class. (Place)

4. S + V + A. She is studying now. (Time)

5. S + V + O + C + A.  She and her classmates are studying English hard and talking happily in the class now.

II. Types of Subjects: 

1. 7 pronouns (I, You, We, They, She, He, It): She studies English. 

2. Nouns (Countable/ Uncountable): His advice was helpful.

3. To V (Infinitive with “to”):  To achieve IELTS 6.5 means a lot to me.

4. V-ing (Gerund):  Achieving IELTS 6.5 means a lot to me.

5. Clause (That/ who/.... + clause + V + O): That he achieved the scholarship has made his friends proud of him.

III. S/V agreements: 

1. S + Tobe (is/was)/ V(s/es) + O. Her parent often takes her to school. The water here is polluted.

2. S + Tobe (are/were)/ V + O. Her parents often give her a lot of useful advice.

3. A and B

3.1. A and B = Plural nouns (A and B are two different objects)     

Apples and Bananas are good for health.

3.2. A and B = Singular nouns (A and B are mixed to become one object)     

Bread and butter is often eaten in the morning.     

Fish and Chips is my favorite dish.

4. Each/ Every + Sing. Noun +  and + Each/ Every + Sing. Noun = Singular Noun

Each coach and each trainee has to join the ceremony by 8AM tomorrow.

Every parent and every student has shown their opinions about the new teaching method.

Every flower and every leaf needs to be taken care of carefully.

Each table and each chair here/ is/ familiar/ with me. (S + V + C1 + C2.)   

Every fan and every air-conditioner/ is consuming/ much power. (S + V + O.)

5. Each/ Every/ Either/ Neither/ All/ Plenty/ Half/ Most/ A lot/ Percentage/ fraction... + Sing. Noun = Singular Nouns

Every individual needs to hand in his or her assignment by this Sunday.

One third of the population gets unemployed due to the impacts of Covid-19.  

All of the soup was had by my sibling.

6. Each/ Every/ Either/ Neither/ All/ Plenty/ Half/ Most/ A lot/ Percentage/ fraction... + of + the/ possessive pro. + Plural Noun = Plural Nouns

Neither of my siblings enjoy drinking coffee.

One third of the city dwellers in Hanoi have worked at home.

All of the attendants are distracted.

7. Indefinite pronouns:

= Singular Nouns: Someone/ Someboby/ anyone/ anybody/ everyone/ everybody/ no-one/ nobody/ Something/ anything/ everything/ nothing     

Nothing is special in this room, is it?     

Someone often follows me when I go home from school, don’t they?

= Singular Nouns: Some (= a bit/a little) / None     

Some is added in the soup. (some salt)

None was drinking coffee at that time. (None of the attendants)

= Plural Nouns: Some (= a few/ several) / None     

Some are waiting in front of the gate now. (Some people)     

None like waiting outdoors for long.(None of the people)

8. A number of + Plural nouns = Plural nouns     

A number of city dwellers have stayed at home for safety.

= Many, a lot of, a wide range of, various, numerous, an array of

The number of + Plural nouns = Singular nouns     

The number of city dwellers is rising sharply.

 = The rate of/ The level of/ The percentage of/ The proportion of/ The ratio of/ The figure for/ The quantity of

9. Singular Nouns:

= A period of time     

Five days is the maximum deadline of your homework.  

= A measurement     

155 centimeters is the average height of Vietnamese people.

= A title   

 “Gone with the wind” is a worldwide famous novel.     

“Five little monkeys” becomes very populary worldwide.  

= A distance     

20 kilometers is not far at all.

= An amount of money   

 1000 dollars is not a high salary in cities.

10. The + Adj = Human group/ Class = Plural nouns

The homeless have suffered from famine these days.

11. Singular nouns with the ending “s”:

+ Diseases: mumps, measles,...

+ Subjects: Physics, economics, linguistics,...

+ Countries/ Places: The United States, The Phillipines,...

+ Sports: Billiards, gymnastics,...

+ Others: Means, species, news...

Economics has been taught in some high schools.

12. N1 + with/ without/ like/ along with/ together with/ as well as/ in addition to/ accompanied by/ other than + N2 + V1 (Verb is formed based on Noun 1)

The teacher as well as the students finds it convenient to study at home.

The students as well as the teacher find it convenient to study at home.

13. Collective nouns (School, class, family, army, club, company, committee, crowd, staff, government, army,...)

= Singular nouns (It refers to the whole group)

My family is the best. My school has a lot of good students.

= Plural nouns (It refers to its members/ parts)

My family are going to take a backpack tour next week.

My school are going to join the WSC contests next year.
